It is absolutely incredible that it is almost a year away from a presidential election, and for some reason so many supposedly conservative voters, people who purportedly think critically, have seemingly because of political pundits and news commentators, decided first that Senator Thompson was lazy, and upon this erroneous characterization being vitiated by his 50-city Iowa bus tour in 2-3 weeks, and better than predicted performance in Iowa, beating Senator McCain, not to mention his successful legal, polictical, and acting careers, that now, after his clearly winning debate performance in South Carolina, it is too late for his candidacy for the Republican nomination. This is remarkable reasoning. Why is it too late? Who says so? How many Americans have voted yet?

There have been 3 primaries to date: Iowa; New Hampshire; and Wyoming. Senator Thompson finished 3rd in Iowa; second in Wyoming; and made a strategic decision not to compete in the other, that is, New Hampshire.

Strategic decisions not to compete in certain states during primaries is most reasonable. Both Governor Romney and Mayor Guiliani made strategic decisions announced yesterday that they would essentially not compete in South Carolina. In fact, Mayor Guiliani made strategic decisions not to compete in Iowa or New Hampshire – and he was the Republican national frontrunner!

This morning, Human Events national magazine, announced their endorsement of Senator Thompson. This is a major conservative publication, a venue for the foremost conservatives in the country. For some reason, they apparently do not believe it is too late. The National Right to Life Organization also endorsed Senator Thompson. They do not believe it is too late either.

Indeed it is “crunch time” for Senator Thompson. Yet, how many winners in American history came through during “crunch time” or in the “clutch?” General George Washingtion came through in the “clutch.” President Abraham Lincoln came through in the “clutch.” General George Patton came through in the “clutch.” President John F. Kennedy came through in the “clutch.” The fact is, Americans love people who come through in the “clutch.” Have traditional conservative voters now become so saturated by a culture of “immediate gratification” that they can be so easily swayed by conclusions that have no basis in logic?

Democratic leaders by virtue of their words and policy actions will not defend America. Their party will not defend or stand for traditional American values, the very strength of the nation. As John Adams said, “Our constitution is only for a moral people. It is inadequate for any other.” The nation’s security and preservation rest on the Republican Party. It is assumed that conservatives desire to save this country, which is under grave threat from without, and a threat from moral malaise within. As Senator Thompson stated in the debate last night, “This is a battle for the heart and soul of the Republican Party and its future.”

Any member of the Republican constituency interested in the preservation and security interests of the United States is well-advised to carefully study and seriously contemplate the Human Events detailed assessment, leading to their endorsement of Senator Thompson. Their editors certainly engaged in critical analysis prior to making this endorsement. Which way Republican voters? Is it too late?

  1. I could not agree more. Why is it that this is being debated? I believe at some point the media needs to have new talking points, and they create news to fill the void. It is curious that the only talking points the media seems to have about Fred Thompson are negative ones, yet they fail to invest much time investigating the obvious negatives of other candidates.

We have almost a year to go, folks. Let’s all take a deep breath, listen more, and talk less. Fred will be fine, or he won’t be, on his merits alone.

  2. Right on target….and without the flak!

  3. Kudo’s on everything!!
The most amazing thing that I’m watching here is how easily people are willing to give up voting for the person they really feel would be their 1st choice for president because they’re convinced by others that it’s ” too little to late”.
After all maybe 5% of America has voted!!

Common’ people– it’s the primarys and voting for your 1st choice is what it’s all about!

  4. We’re just getting started…47 States to go! Fred will do this!

  5. Obviously, it is NOT too late for Fred Thompson, and it is shortsighted, ludicrous even, to suggest so.

I, for one, will NEVER vote for John McCain under ANY circumstances — not even if Satan’s apostle herself is the Democrat nominee! McCain has screwed us all way too many times. And Ron Paul? Kook. ‘Nuff said.

My choices for the GOP nomination are as follows (in exactly this order): (1st) Fred Thompson, (2nd) Mike Huckabee, (3rd) Mitt Romney, and (4th) Rudy Giuliani.

If McCain somehow miraculously manages to get the nomination, then for the first time in almost 30 years I will NOT be voting for the GOP nominee. In that event, I will have been left no choice but to vote Constitution Party, Libertarian Party, or cast a write-in.

McCain is simply unacceptable — utterly and completely out of the question — for numerous reasons. So, GOP higher-ups, I hope you’re paying attention because there are literally thousands of grassroots conservatives out here in the trenches who feel the same way I do about John McCain.

This means that if the 2008 election is as close as the 2004 and 2000 presidential elections were, then the Democrats have a real shot at winning the White House if McCain is the GOP nominee. You’ve been warned!

  6. I think Thompson’s not gaining traction because he’s failed to distinguish his position on the issues from the others.
Huckabee on the other have has clearly differentiated himself (whether you agree with his position or not).

  7. The liberal pundits say Fred has conspired to be the dog in the manger for McCain. Conservative pundits ice Fred out because his efforts in SC are “too little, too late.”

They gave Huck a pass on the substantive critique advanced by Fred. His silly and meaningless retort, “I am taking flack. I must be over the target,” begs the question of what target he is over. Could the target be the conservative coalition?

If it’s too late for Fred it’s not also because he offers too little. Fred offers more to real conservatives than any other candidate.

Rudy lacks depth and is becoming more and more unimportant. He’s running out of steam and money. Mitt is out of intellectual gas and his “to do” list is too long to be reasonable. Huck is a good man but fiscal and defense conservatives will ultimately reject him. McCain, a gift to our nation, will self-destruct over taxes and immigration reform as his failures on these issues conflict with his exceptional ego.

And Fred will be there. When will the punditry get it?

I live in Georgia, just fifteen miles across the Savannah River from South Carolina. We are more independent and self-reliant concerning our opinions and we are less likely to listen to “experts” telling us what the polls should make us think.

We don’t mind stirring the pot either.

    Go Fred.

  8. I want FRED!

Of course it’s not too late and I resent the experts treating him in this manner.

    It’s our country too!

  9. This nation and the republican party have forgotten or grown up not knowing that conservatism is the basis of the republican party. That’s what being a republican means .To modernize the party to fit into the new regiment of politics we now have left, moderate, and evangelical conservatives.Poppy cock!I am a conservative a republican and all that entails. The constitution is the basis of conservatism .Federalism and conservatism are not dead and Fred Thompson is living proof and is willing to take on his broad shoulders the burden of saving it.Republicans unite behind the only real conservative running in this race or you may have another chance for 8 years to try and do it again.

  10. Whether or not Fred is a good candidate, he has not captured the imagination of the electorate. I’m only one of many who turned to Huckabee because of doubts about whether or not Fred really wanted the job of president. He acts like he doesn’t care, and I don’t believe his tenure in the senate and his acting career have prepared him for the Presidency as much as the experience of a popular sitting governor who only left office because of term limits.

  11. I have talked about this at length in the past, but it’s something that people seem to be forgetting.

The media is not running the election. They like to think they are and are trying to capitalize on the fact that people tend to be sheep when it comes to the word of the media… But in the end, it’s absurd for the media to be trying to call who’s “finished” this early on in the process.

It seems like they are actively working to try and sink ships before they ever get a real fair shot.

    media bias? nah… 🙂

  12. Radiant Times, as a conservative I find Huckabee nearly as unappealing as McCain. Do you not mind his strange and seemingly ignorant positions on foreign policy? Immigration? What about all the tax increases? The term “Fair Tax” is almost certainly a euphemism for taxing the “rich”. He is funny so who cares? Sorry, I just do not get the Huckabee supporters. I do not mean to insult any of you but he strikes me as nothing but an opportunist.

As for Fred “wanting” the job.. How many times do people say they want “change”? Wouldn’t a reluctant candidate be a change for the better? Instead of the parade of people who have campaigned for decades like McCain and Clinton?

Quit saying that Fred can’t win. If people who support his positions vote for him, he CAN win.

  13. I totally agree. But ditch the black background, it is annoying.
I also agree with several of your posters: McCain is unaccetable. But so is Huckabee. Thompson is right: Huckabee is a liberal – on both economics and foreign policy. McCain is liberal on economics and social policy.
My order of preference is: 1. Thompson. 2. Romney. I believe he would be even better than Thompson on domestic affairs, the best manager, the most likely to succeed in shrinking the federal government. I acknowledge that he has changed his position on some issues, but I believe him when he says he has changed his mind. I like Thompson better because he more clearly ties his positions to an understanding of the core values on which our country was founded and which make us uniquely Americans and are responsible for the creation of our successes: liberty and the rule of law. 3. Giuliani. Conservative on economics and foreign policy. I am OK with him on social policy because he has committed to appoint strict constructionist judges and I believe him because of his law enforcement backgroung. As long as he does that, what he believes personally is unimportant.

  14. “have traditional conservative voters now become so saturated that they can be so easily swayed by conclusions that have NO BASIS IN LOGIC?”

looking at creationist in the US… well

  15. It is over for Fred. And no the media isn’t making it so …. it is the electoral process that makes it so. It’s money, all money. If you can’t afford to compete, you can’t compete. Anything else you have all said is just “feel good” stuff. To look at it any other way is absurd.
Like it or not, it will all be over by February 5th, or sooner. Guliani is dead in the water, so is Fred. Ron Paul should have quit long ago. Romney is just spinning his wheels. He can never work out the numbers to win if the south doesn’t go along with him, and they won’t because he belongs to a “cult”. Though his “cult” is just a different one from the many southern “cults”.
And McCain is a joke. Having spent days with him yearly at Christmas time in Arizona …. he is just a little man with a little man complex. He is known for saying what he is supposed to say when he is supposed to say it. Not much of a free thinker, and certainly not someone who thinks this country needs a way out of the quagmire Baby Bush has got us into.
But keep thinking that Fred will be able to afford to hang in there much longer. Keep thinking that the decision of who the Republicans choose as there candidate will be decided in November. Just keep your head in the sand til then.

  16. I am an evangelical Southern Baptist and do not understand how one becomes a “former Southern Baptist pastor”. As I read scripture, you don’t decide to “try out” being a pastor, you are called to be one, and it is not up to you to become “un-ordained”. What caused Governor Huckabee to decide to drop his church and get into politics? Were some of his views too liberal for his relationship with his denomination? Were his ambitions in conflict with his “first call” to the ministry? We should all be involved. We are called to be salt and light. I just don’t get what led the governor to become “un-called” to the ministry. This is not something he should be able to brush off as none of my business. He wears his faith on his sleeve and quotes scripture when it suits him. He should tell us when he came to the realization he was no longer called to be a pastor. His background…all of it…tells us whether he is fit to be President of the United States.

Of course it’s not too late because I’m from Chicago and I vote early and often (and so do all of my dead relatives) and we’re voting for Fred.

    President Fred Dalton Thompson.

Now that has a nice ring to it.

  17. The polls on RealClearPolitics aren’t encouraging. Nevertheless, I don’t think we should count Fred out. My support is centered on a view that the Presidency during wartime isn’t a good place for on the job training – we need someone who knows Washington and how to get things done. After Kennedy’s assasination, Johnson got incredible volumes of legislation passed, because he understood how to make things happen. ( And the line about if you’ve got them by the XXX their hearts and minds will follow entered the political lexicon).

Thompson – and yes you McCain haters – McCain- have been right on the war and terrorism from the start. I like Mitt a lot – I worked for a company controlled by Bain a few years ago – and he is an outstanding executive. I’m confident he would build the best possible cabinet – but I’m concerned about military service/foreign policy background.

My wife and I have sent a check recently to keep the Thompson campaign going – I ask that you do the same.

Pollsters have a big margin of error this time around….

  18. I am an evangelical Christian and a Thompson supporter. If I had to, I could vote for Romney, but I know folks who would NEVER vote for a Mormon. I would have to hold my nose, but I could vote for Giuliani. There are NO circumstances where I will vote for McCain or Huckabee, period. If either is the nominee, REAL Republicans will stay home in droves, and Hillarama will win. The GOP will get the defeat it deserves!! So for all you Huck and McCain aficionados, get off the liberal bandwagon, unless you want to get used to saying “President Clinton” for four years. Fortunately, it will only be four, because the country is not stupid enough yet to re-elect a Clinton again.

  19. Fred is the ONLY candidate I can agree with on most issues. He’s formulated solid plans/policies/positions on taxes, terrorism, health care, education, immigration, etc…all of the issues that are (or should be) the critical points of the campaign. We all know how Fred took Huckabee on during the debate – how come we never see anyone go after Fred that way? Because they can’t win that argument, they know he’s right.

  20. Larry right on right on I’m with you. We will lose if McCain or Huck are the nominees. The media are pushing for them so that we can lose.
My prayers are the people make a very serious decision within the Republican Party this election. More so than ever before. Are we going to continue the principles of Ronald Reagan or go into a more liberal mode?”
The media McCain and Huck would have you believe conservatism is dead and they have a better plan. Don’t be fooled. I just don’t think Romney has enough to go all the way. I also think maybe Rudy has peaked and gone. Don’t give away what has made our party successful. I will go for Fred because he is a true conservative I refuse to change I won’t change.

Of course they do Heather. That’s why ther’re so busy agreeing with him all the time.

  21. Hello! Hello! Fred is dead. We heard his pitch in Iowa and we didn’t buy it. The media isn’t voting for Huckabee, we the people are. Give us a little credit that we can discern the media. Please? Talking about media, you better watch that liar Rush instead. He’s still trying to exploit the social conservatives to keep his kind in power. His kind stole our money and spent our children’s money as well. We don’t trust the democrats either but enough is enough. We are a grabbing our pitchforks and crosses and coming to town to take back that what was stolen and no more. Anybody got a problem with that?

  22. Mary Hinners, I do have a problem with that. You are being manipulated. Huckabee will not be elected, so supporting him just guarantees that the Dims will be in the White House. It is not that the “people” won’t vote for Huck, the people of his own party won’t. I like the guy, and I am a Christian, raised as a Baptist. My problem is not his religion, it is his notion that government can solve problems. Personally, ALL of my problems have been caused BY THE GOVERNMENT!!!! I have seen way too many like him who have good intentions, but don’t realize that they ARE the problem. He is a Democrat, masquerading as a Republican. And, yes, we have had enough of those. On that point, I agree with you.

  23. The dems want to steal from the rich. Mary just wants the promises made to her by the elite after courting her all these years. She feels used and questions who are really the true republicans. The elite are really showing their true colors with their continuous critisim of Huckabee and painting him as a populist and a religious zealot. We can see through that one as well. For that same reason their candidate will not win the white house. They had countless chances to keep their pledge. The middle class continues to be taxed and taxed, living cost are increasing and our take home home pay is shrinking to pay for health insurance premiums. Vote Huckabee, a common man who understands our plight. Don’t fall for that old steady hand at a time of war argument. Don’t fall for that fiscal conservative argument, they been bought and paid for with the special interest groups. Don’t buy anything from the elite, they been manipulating us for years.

  24. This is unbelieveable. Huckabee a commobn man. He has been a politician for how long? Living off the peoples hard earned money for how long? This is a ridiculous ploy being played on those with deep hearts and shallow minds. Look past the fancy talk and quick wit. The democrats always play the class warfare card. Is it to OUR benefit that we do also? Whatever the excuses people…big government is not the answer…it is the problem. People cry …I have to pay more for this and more for that. Thats LIFE! I am sick and tired of the complainers in this world. Get yourself together and make a better life for yourself.

  25. Silk, Not everyone born into this world was born to be wealthy. I believe in an America where everyone has the oppurtunity but in that struggle the fact is there are those that don’t make it. God didn’t make everyone with the same IQ or didn’t make us all look the same. Some of us have defects and for whatever reason are not going to make it to the top. Getting another part time job isn’t making my life better or my wife working isn’t making our family better. We had that small government crap for ages now and they have held the presidency and controlled the congress at the same time. Yet where is that small government they hold so dearly? It’s time for a change! The government is a mirror of the people. Let the changes in goverment begin at home by grabbing your pitchfork and standing up and saying Enough is Enough! You want Social Security fixed. Now! You want them to stop stealing from your paycheck. Now! You want them to stop killing the babies. Now!

  26. Matt, you are quite correct. It is time for a change! That is why we need to put Thompson and Co. in charge. That is your only hope. The liberals have created this mess, and only the conservatives can fix it. Try supporting a REAL conservative, not a phony. Remember the old phrase…”I am from the government, and I am here to help you”. This statement always precedes disaster.

  27. Thompson isn’t going to change anything. He’s not a leader. He is a follower of those same clonies in Washington that empowered him into the race. I think he should go back home and raise up those children that God has blessed him with again. You can tell that inwardly that is what he want’s to do as well.
He’s just isn’t in the game!

  28. We weren’t called to set up His kingdom here on earth. But the goverment was ordained to be the keeper of justice. As a citizen of the greatest country on God’s green earth, we the people are called to be the voice and protector of the unborn, the poor, and the exploited. The Huckabee haters will point fingers at us and cry: “There wearing their religion on their sleeves. Watch Out! Watch Out!” Like a thief when the police drive up the road, so is their warnings to their own kind. They are afraid not because of our religion, but because their lies and deceit are being held up to the light. Vote for Huck!

  29. SheetAnchor Once again you amaze me with your tremendous insight into the heart and mind of Fred Thompson as well as your view of those that want to end the Thompson campaign for trivial reasons. I can’t help but to comment to the above Huckabee supporters. There was another religious mesmerizing speaker with alot of wit and charm some time ago that was able to amass thousands of supporters. His name was Jim Jones and he too promised his believers a utopia. In Ghana he even convinced them to drink the koolaid and go to there death for him. Are you people so so taken in by a witty guy, who plays the guitar and hucks it up with you, but has not had one policy that is reasonable or passable. Are you so starved for a little attention and humor in your lives. Huckabee said himself- Jesus would be too smart to become a politician. He needs to take his own advice. He can do much more as your pastor than Commander in Chief where he has no qualifications whatever.

  30. Oh my God! – Now Huck is being compared to the likes of Jim Jones. And King David should have stayed in the military teaching slingshot techniques. I’m not saying that Huck is anything like King David, but it shows the fallicy of your argument.

  31. Remember the fable – Turtle and the Hare. Fred is not to late. The MSM nor the liberal elements of the GOP want him to win.

I will add an observation. It would seem that the GOP is moving more to left of center on most of the true social issues that used to be the foundation of the OLD GOP. If that is the case, Fred doesn’t have a chance.

Fred is the man !!! Nobody wants to listen to what is saying, the just want the fire in the belly. When you hear him talk, you can tell he knows what he is talking about and he means it. He is a very smart man and I would want him sitting across from our enemy. Everybody get of the Huckabee train and jump on the real conservative train, Fred Thompson’s train. Go to fred08.com and give this man some support so he can do his thing because it dosent look like the media is going to help him out. THANKS

The media is just trying to manipulate the election, as usual. They’re just hoping it’s too late for Fred because they know he will blow Hillary or Obama out of the water. As far as my family is concerned, Fred is the only choice.

  32. How can any conservative vote for Romney?

He was listed as one of the top ten Republicans in Name Only by Human Events Magazine.

    http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=11129

What will he be after the primary?

And would he be another George Bush if he gets elected?

  33. Bite my shiny metal ass, assholes, you were joked!
